Southeast US: bees & flowers & mushrooms (oh my!)

In my (landlady's) front garden, there's a plant that seems to be a favorite of the local bee population. I have enjoyed watching them for quite some time and decided to share. The camera I'm using is, well, pretty slow, so it took a while to get these shots. (Again, all shots can be clicked for gigantic, uncropped version.)

Also in this garden, there's a mysterious (but quite nice) flower. Right beside the front porch. It gets visited by the salamander-types a lot, but they're too fast for me to share pictures of them, too. Further up in the yard, there is a tree stump that has been repurposed by some slightly enormous mushrooms.

(not the flower I promised you, Liz! because I am slow (and/or busy) and that's still on my camera. but I do have pictures of it! just have to remember to post them.)

The plant with bees is basil. It gets quite pungent after it flowers, so you might as well leave it to the bees.

Basil is the bee plant and Hibiscus is the flower. The mushrooms are typical wild detrius loving fungi. Not edible that I can tell.

Is that why my mom always wants me to pinch the flowers off the basil? Huh. Well, my bunny doesn't seem to care whether it's pungent...

That's right! Some people like it better after a few buds form too, but most people find that taste unpleasantly strong.

The first image of the bee is especially lovely. Thank you for sharing! :-)
