I live in a very urban area, but there are lots of deer living here in people's backyards. It's not a good environment for them, but they really have nowhere else to go.
My brain can't connect "deer" with "very urban area". Hm, maybe there's hope to see deer in backyards here in Chicago! (I can dream, can't I?) If I saw such a beautiful creature in my yard, I wouldn't get anything else done the rest of the day.
Anyway, thanks for getting that shot and sharing it!
Yes, it surprised me tremendously to see so many of them when we moved here. Where we lived before was more suburban with large wooded areas where the deer could live. Here, we're in the heart of a city, and I see 3 to 5 times as many deer. Where I grew up was quite urban, and we never saw deer near our houses. The one time a moose walked down the street, everyone came out and watched because it was such a novelty. Times change, habitats shrink.
Oh, isn't he gorgeous. I get a small herd of bachelor bucks coming through my yard sometimes, but only at night. How lucky of you that he shows up in the day! Your yard must feel really safe for him.
When I lived in Tennessee, the deer used to rush through my yard at dawn and begin to appear again at dusk. During the day they hung out in the parks, down the powerline, and by the river where there was foliage to hide in. Here, the deer don't seem to care, and we see them at all times of the day and night going about their business sampling the plants in our yards or bedding down in the bushes.
My dream is to live in places like this someday! The only "wildlife" we get around here is gang bangers shooting at each other. Not nearly as inspiring. Bah!
Gosh, no! I am proof that you don't have to go as far from city areas as you once did to find this sort of wildlife, though. I'll bet there are parts of Chicago that have them. I don't believe that Cleveland is that unique.
The Chicago Wildlife Watch is a project led by the Lincoln Park Zoo to monitor wildlife with trail cams around the city. They use volunteer help to tag the wildlife in the photos and yep, you get them in the city. Not as much as say raccoons and squirrels, but they do show up.

Oh, wow!
Yeah, that's the sad part, if they have nowhere else to be, but more populated areas. I hate the thought of animals getting hit by cars.

I sometimes get roe deer in my garden, but they are only interested in my tulip bulbs!
