Orange tip butterfly

There are at least two orange tips battling it out for ownership of our garden. I hardly ever see them settle because they're always sparring, so catching one perched fleetingly on an iris leaf was a rare pleasure.

I've tried to snap butterflies before, and rarely get them motionless. What a beauty.

What a great photo! You can even see how fuzzy his body is. He's not very coordinated though, the light blue colour clash with his orange-yellow wing tips :-)

I spent the better part of an afternoon waiting for one of them to settle whilst working in the garden. I'd put my trowel aside, grab my camera, follow them around and then 99% of the time walk back to my digging spot after a minute without having pressed the shutter release once!

I think he's got toddler fashion sense. The outfit my daughter came up with today had a similarly eye-popping effect. It involved three horizontally striped items in wildly different colours, and a pair of purple converse with red velcro straps. It was the sort of thing you can only get away with when you're two and a half, or possibly if you're Mathangi Arulpragasam.

Yes. Having the time to wait patiently for the chance to take a photo of a flitting butterfly is indeed a luxury. I'm trying to savour it as much as possible, because I won't be going on maternity leave again.
