The harlequin ladybirds, Harmonia axyridis, are awakening from their hibernation in my window frames. Yesterday one of them walked across the carpet to my tiny plastic Dalek and bit it repeatedly all over, so I got my camera out. I'm not sure it counts as common nature exactly....

Beady robin side-eye. "There's no sign that says you must perch on the side of the feeder. I'm going in through the top!"

Nuthatch, goldfinch, great tit

Nuthatch: "Hey! I got a peanut."
Goldfinch: "Cool. I'm eating thistle seeds."
Great tit: "BANZAAAAI!"

I *think* this is a cricket (a speckled bush-cricket). If I'm right, that means we have both grasshoppers and crickets in our garden!

Works very hard to extract each peanut from the feeder, then flies to sit on the branch and munch on it.

A patch of nasturtiums in our central flower bed is currently being decimated by a horde of large cabbage white caterpillars. Since I have to fight to keep the nasturtiums from taking over said flower bed, I don't really begrudge them their feast.

The oregano, up until the recent spate of wet and windy weather, was smothered in butterflies. I've counted six small tortoiseshells, two gatekeepers, a comma, a peacock and this small skipper on our modestly sized plant at once, along with many bees (bumble and honey), flies and beetles. Sometimes I don't know where to point my lens, I'm so spoiled for choice.

The toddler and I followed this large white butterfly from flower to flower for about fifteen minutes on this very sunny morning.

I think these little moorhens must be pretty new! They were cheeping incessantly at their parents as we strolled along the towpath on the opposite side of the canal.

"Mum, I'm huuuuungry, Mum."

I was out walking when I saw a wide variety of colourful but broken snail shells, which were probably evidence of a serial-killing thrush. A bird either dropped snails onto the hard surfaces from a height or, more likely in this case, held a snail in their beak and bashed it, before extracting the snail from the broken shell and eating it or feeding it to a nearby baby bird.

I suspect he was hoping we might drop some food.
