a profusion of poppies

Not far from where I live there's a dry, sunny slope and right now it's completely filled with bright orange Oriental Poppies (Papaver orientale). It's an old garden flower here in southern Sweden and occasionally it seems to thrive in the wild too.

They're beautiful, and quite different from the poppies I was used to seeing in California. (They're the State Flower.)

Such a striking sight! A friend just sent me some photos of her garden this week, also with poppies as well as some in a pretty flower arrangements.

There's nothing like them. A friend of mine had a clump in her garden, and when it was in bloom, cars passing by would slow or even stop so people could gape at the flowers.
