Not far from where I live there's a dry, sunny slope and right now it's completely filled with bright orange Oriental Poppies (Papaver orientale). It's an old garden flower here in southern Sweden and occasionally it seems to thrive in the wild too.
There's nothing like them. A friend of mine had a clump in her garden, and when it was in bloom, cars passing by would slow or even stop so people could gape at the flowers.

I have been seeing more poppies here in the States, lately, but they just don't seem to be able to thrive in my own yard. π
