a profusion of poppies

Not far from where I live there's a dry, sunny slope and right now it's completely filled with bright orange Oriental Poppies (Papaver orientale). It's an old garden flower here in southern Sweden and occasionally it seems to thrive in the wild too.

They're beautiful, and quite different from the poppies I was used to seeing in California. (They're the State Flower.)

They're so bright and happymaking and so are California poppies. (I love orange!) California poppies are a popular summer plant in gardens here but it's never become an escapee like the Oriental poppies.

Such a striking sight! A friend just sent me some photos of her garden this week, also with poppies as well as some in a pretty flower arrangements.

I love them and try to walk past them as often as possible during their short flowering.

There's nothing like them. A friend of mine had a clump in her garden, and when it was in bloom, cars passing by would slow or even stop so people could gape at the flowers.

I have been seeing more poppies here in the States, lately, but they just don't seem to be able to thrive in my own yard. 💔

I've never seen such a large collection of them anywhere else! Judging by this location this poppy species like very dry soil and lots of sunshine.
