Ducklings

[Two ducklings, one facing the camera and one showing us its fluffy backside.]

Someone left the top gate on our canal lock open today and these two plus their four siblings got stuck at the far end of the lock next to the closed gate. They couldn't scramble out to meet their momma standing on the lock edge. I went out to chivvy her back toward the open gate, and luckily the ducklings trapped in the lock followed her all the way out the gate, which I shut behind them. All seem to be okay if a little peeved with me, and I can take it!

Yes, it does. I can't see that level of automation being implemented any time soon, however.

Depending on the size of the gate, self closers can be really easy. Footgates can be made self closing with nothing more than a spring fastened back to the hinge post and a block or a latch to stop the gate at the latch post. A big gate is a lot harder!

Glad these made their way out! Our man-made lake has often been a trap for ducklings in that only in the drainage area could they even stand or sit and even then couldn't climb out. Thanks to our algae problem part of the wall has now been demolished to get equipment in and out, and the ramp has turned into duck beach :)
