Surprise Duckies!

I was heading out on an errand and came to a halt when I saw the following family making their way past our mailboxes. What caught my attention were the yellow babies since normally all the mallard ducklings are brown and yellow. ( Read more... )

Nine dew-bedecked ducklings scooted past my window one morning last week, dabbling at the grass seeds as they went.

Someone left the top gate on our canal lock open today and these two plus their four siblings got stuck at the far end of the lock next to the closed gate. They couldn't scramble out to meet their momma standing on the lock edge. I went out to chivvy her back toward the open gate, and luckily the ducklings trapped in the lock followed her all the way out the gate, which I shut behind them. All seem to be okay if a little peeved with me, and I can take it!

I popped outside for a quick canalside walk after lunch and had to go pelting back to the house to get my camera. Because DUCKLINGS!

Slwch Tump with anthills, gorse flowers, and a view to Pen y Fan (the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons, South Wales, and Southern Britain, at a mere 886m). St Eluned was reputedly beheaded here in the 5th century.
