Squirrel Flet and Sunflower Heads
Branches have fallen all over the yard from recent storms. Today I started picking up some of them, and noticed that there was a fallen squirrel flet. A squirrel's nest may also be called a drey.
Also today, I started harvesting dry sunflower heads. The small to medium ones I have hung as bird food. Those with big heads or good multiflora form I am putting in the septic garden, hoping they will reseed like the 'Autumn Joy' did last year.

Sunflower Fields in 2024
Our sunflower field opened for visitors and the weather cooled off enough for a very pleasant stroll. Large areas have been cleared or mowed down for people to walk on, but some flowers persisted. We found several which were lying on the ground and we were able to prop them back up by gathering some of the debris around the base. ( Read more... )

Be Unique
This was our standout photo from the sunflower maze last year. Don't know whether it's a genetic variation or what, but really interesting to see this one plant bucking the trend.( Read more... )
