We visited the butterfly gardens at the Charleston Library, on June 19 although this is dated 20 because it's after midnight. They were filled with birds, although I didn't manage to catch any pictures of them.

Knock Out Honey Bees
Jun. 15th, 2025 11:57 amMy mom's garden has a vigorous knock out rosebush just beside it, and various bees adore it. Although I'm severely allergic to bites and stings, I will still follow honey and bumble bees; they're too busy to care about me.
Fun fact about me: I cannot smell typical roses. Knockouts are the only roses I can smell.

Today we went out to the lake. These pictures primarily show the pollinator gardens around the parking lot and the approach to the lake paths.

I left the house today. One of my stops was a store with nicer plants than most garden stores I've been to, and there were dozens of various bees. (I wish I'd gotten a photo of the honey bees on the same onion.)

Although I am very allergic to bug bites, I will follow neat bugs to try and get decent photos on my phone. Right now, the oregano is in bloom, attracting lots of pollinators (and unsavory types such as hornets and wasps).

Bees, Blossoms and Sunsets

These pink blossoms were so pretty to see. When I got closer I could tell the tree was abuzz with bees and was able to snap one going about its work.

I don't often manage the insect photos I try to take - my camera just isn't up to the job (I had a choice of getting one more portable than my old one, or upgrading to a DSLR... clearly took the wrong choice), but this one turned out nicely! Taken along a hiking route above Cheddar, this past July.
Anyone able to ID the flower? I like it but I haven't a clue.

Common nature and a rare beetle
May. 28th, 2016 11:24 amProbably Selatosomus aeneus, a rare-ish "click" beetle in metallic turquoise and blue armour.

[Honey bee with its proboscis buried in a lavender blossom. Light "vintage" filtering applied during post-processing.]
I've been delighted to observe, in addition to the drone flies, a plethora of honey bee visitors to our lavender this year. Last year we had many bumbles, but few honey, and I suspect that the addition to their garden of an apiary by a neighbour down the canal has made the difference.
Sleeping beeeauties (sorry, sorry)
Aug. 19th, 2013 11:59 amNow a couple from closer to home. Went out the other evening to have a look at my garden and caught some bees asleep on the flowers.
( Two pics below )
I know next to nothing about bees. There are different kinds of bumblebee, yes? Can anyone id these more specifically?

Red-tailed bumblebees, Bombus lapidarius, nesting. The open cells are "honey pots" for food and the closed are "larval cells" for baby bees. A couple of bees exhibited territorial behaviour by flying at me while I captured these images but they were investigative not aggressive.
