I used to see so many in the midwest(US) as a child. haven't found one of these guys in so long!

I was going to say the same, though I didn't grow up in the Midwest. But we'd seen a few of these every year on our balcony garden for a while but haven't seen any for several years now. It's too bad.

when I moved to florida roughly 15 years ago, I never saw them anymore. different ecosystem, I suppose.

I've seen walking sticks a few times over the years, but never a lovely mantis. I used to pick them up and hold them, and then gently put them back :)
