Today I took pictures of icicles and snow, mostly in the house yard, some down the driveway.

A big flock (larger than we captured here given their frequent movement) of common starlings were circling about this week. It seemed like we might be a food stop on their way to someplace else.

Rather tardy at this point, but why not? A few weeks ago we were still getting very little color around here.

This afternoon I went outside intending to fasten the decorative wagonwheel, but it was half-buried under snow. I noticed the view looked pretty, though, so I went back for my camera and took pictures instead.

Was in a t-shirt indoors on Tuesday and a light fleece outdoors while we were decorating our balcony. On Wednesday there was this howling through our area. Huge fat flakes and a gusty enough wind that everything was blowing sideways. Lasted only half an hour or so, though there was lighter snow earlier and later.

Wasn't cold enough to stick for more than an hour but it was something while it lasted. A colleague was driving home through it and said she only had a few feet of visibility. Read more... )

It snowed today, and I was wondering what the beach would look like covered in snow, so I went for a walk to see it. It was very pretty!

The migratory birds are here now, and some of them spend the winter at the shore. I spent some time watching a flock of sanderlings and turnstones as they were looking for food in the mud. Some crows kept following them around. It looked like the smaller birds were scared of the crows and tried to avoid them. There were many seagulls, too. My birding app even registered the call of a loon! Loons normally live in North America and Iceland, but some of them migrate to Europe during the winter months.

Last Friday our area got about 8 hours of first rain, then ice, then snow. Our balcony turned into a bird sanctuary as high winds kept sending all the precipitation sideways (and causing damage along the way). Read more... )

Earlier in the week we started getting winter weather advisory notices. There were predictions of 4-8 inches of snow, which hardly ever happens anymore. But by Tuesday night I noticed that the hourly predictions had us right around the freezing mark overnight, meaning that at best there would be a light covering of snow because most of it wasn't going to stay frozen.

Even so, my partner's workplace sent out a closure announcement Tuesday night. Wednesday AM, sure enough there was barely enough snow to cover the sidewalks. It looked real pretty on the bare trees but by 11 AM the trees were bare again (even though snow was coming down through the afternoon) as were the sidewalks and parking lot. Read more... )

We got our first snow of the season yesterday, and I don't think the heron much appreciated it. I can't remember ever seeing one late in the year -- probably because when the lakes freeze over it can't fish. So I imagine it will be heading off as there is more snow today.

I'm also surprised the snow shows up so clearly -- but they were pretty thick flakes. Read more... )

Most of the central US has had a late snowstorm. I'm in eastern Kansas, and this redbud tree stands outside my kitchen window.

About an inch here, sometime between 1030pm and 2am, when I woke up and looked outside.

These were taken around 7am, early because I knew with the incoming high winds, the beauty wouldn't last.

Just another plug, too, for [community profile] threeforthememories which has gotten its first posts this week. If you have 2020 photos you could share, do join in!

We had weather advisories of heavy fog yesterday morning -- and maybe there was at 6 AM. But by the time I was up and using the camera, the best sign I got was in this photo. I was disappointed as I thought it would have created a great look with icy trees. Read more... )

Went hiking last weekend, and what was boring rain in the valley and frozen rain on the slope turned into extremely dramatic clouds + 80km/h wind once we hit the ridge. I've posted a couple of photos on my blog.

The Shaggy Ponies in the field over the canal from my house share their grazing land with a lot of bird life. The most common year-round visitors are the wagtails, but in the winter, they also share with the fieldfares.

They're difficult to photograph against a grassy green background, as their subtle colouration renders them effectively a Small Brown Bird unless you're quite close to them. In the snow, however, they're a little easier to capture. I happened to look out the window when our most recent (and hopefully last) snowstorm hit this weekend and saw them near the house.

Four fieldfares in the snow, three on the ground and one in the air.
