A poem newly minted

I have just joined this community via the ever delightful _dewline_

I'm a poet and photographer living in the very rural English county of Shopshire (over in the west close to the Welsh border).

This was inspired by the times in which we are living and a woodland walk taken in Wenlock's Wood on Wednesday just past to help in preserving sanity.

The word 'oakdapple' sprang to mind and this is where it took me.

A poem for these sad, distract'd times.


Nature still makes gushings of green 
and oakdapple falls on woodland ride.
The power that drives the flower flows
and fills  the fields with flourishing.

Nature gives birdshout  prodigally 
No social distance here but to say
'This space is mine and not yours.
This leafhome amidst the treefolk'

And we walk among the woodlight
Forgetting fogged fear and fatality.
This space always more kindly
Than nest sites of naked apefolk.

The wood was ablaze with wild garlic in full  flower!

When we were in the Wye it was wild garlic everywhere and I mentioned you talking about making pesto with it and he asked me “which part do you use?”

I’m aware I could Google it, but I can also use it to start a conversation ;)

The leaves (and flowers when they're out) are best although you could use the root for flavouring like farmed/grown garlic- the whole thing is edible.

My version of the pesto:

5oz wild garlic leaves
2oz parmesan
Juice and zest of half a lemon
2oz chopped toasted pine nuts,
5oz rapeseed oil

Blitz.

Done.

Eat and enjoy- wonderful on hot buttered toast, through pasta or risotto or on a baked tatie.

We're under forest and hill country locally on the road into Wales, but somehow that was a walk we'd managed to miss in the four years we've lived here.

I studied early English and Norse literature as an undergrad and some of it influenced rather deeply. :o)

I do like 'birdshout'! That's what they are doing in my garden, not "I'm The Sexiest" any longer but definitely "This space is mine and not yours".

We have large numbers of baby birds turning up at our feeders now, bumming off mum and dad.

I got my first camera at 6- a little point and press Kodak 127 and am now 63 and considering upgrading to a mirrorless DSLR from the Sony DSLR that took this one, so I hope I've learned a bit in between times! :o)
