I am Dutch, and it is not considered a slur at all. It is not linguistically the 'correct' word (it would in fact be the natural cognate for 'German'), and the pedants among us will not hesitate to point this out, but it is the correct & accepted word in English and as such it is the word pretty much anyone would use to self-describe when speaking English.
(As a matter of fact Deutsch/Duits/Diets were on occasion used to describe the language spoken in the Netherlands up until the nineteenth century, which is why in the national anthem stadhouder William of Nassau is called what in current usage translates to 'of German blood'...)
