First Snow of the Season

Rather tardy at this point, but why not? A few weeks ago we were still getting very little color around here.



But then one tree which always seems to turn early, and a brilliant red at that, completed its transition.



Fortunately it did so early enough that when the winds and snow came, we'd had a chance to enjoy it. The red carpet you can see lakeside is all from its foliage.



Other nearby trees had gone straight to a light brown or dark yellow, so we didn't get a lot of really pretty color.



It wasn't a huge amount of snow, maybe 3 inches, but it did blow around a good deal, as this is what we saw when we opened our balcony door.



Areas around our building were fairly well dusted.



As was the balcony for a full day (and you can see the area below top right).

Lovely! We get very little seasonal colour in Auckland where I live, too subtropical. Except the liquid ambers, they're reliable.

It wasn't a particularly early snow, but it stayed warm so late this year that it seems it took some areas by surprise. Normally the roads would be salted and plows would be out if they expected it to stick, but no one was. As it happened I had to leave early for an eye appointment the next morning and by 9 AM cars were skidding off roads everywhere.

To me, that looks like quite a lot of snow!

I'm so glad we can see it from our apartment -- it's been quite reliable with the color!

We have a few trees on our block that turn a very spectacular red like that - so gorgeous! Pretty snow, too.

We've just had our first hewre in Shropshire although it didn't amount to much.

Is that a specific type of snowfall?

Yes, I remember when I was on a campus, there was a block with several large old trees which would turn a bright yellow. I took this icon pic when viewing the carpet of their leaves, which was also such a seasonal sight.

My first impression of that red tree was of a red crabapple in bloom! I don't think I've ever seen such violently red autumn foliage before.

I always feel there's something magical about the first snow. Possibly because I really like snow and we usually don't get a lot of it here these days.

We get less and less of it here, too. We seem to have a number of such trees in the city. They're always so noticeable, especially when the landscape gets starker. They're like a pop in the eye!
