I love these beautiful noisy birds. We have a few that come to the yard. It's hard to get pictures though because they're a bit shy. I had to take this between the railing on my porch.
If you'd like to try getting more blue jays, we have a LOT LOT LOT of success by putting out peanuts. Raw in the shell, unroasted, unsalted peanuts. They go crazy for them.
I agree about the peanuts!! We actually put peanuts out on the far side of the yard to distract the bluejays away from the regular feeders. They are pretty aggressive birds and won't let others get to the seed.
The peanuts are the way I've gotten them to visit actually. Before I'd see one far up in the trees by they never came close. Still hard to get photos though. They are skittish still and the yard is very very small. I live in a city and the area is all multi-family homes, super close together. I don't even have any trees in the backyard, the trees are in the neighbors' yard and tend to hang over ours.
I'm hoping in the winter I'll be able to get better pics.
That's a beautiful shot! We're lucky enough to have lots of blue jays, and they make such a great variety of sounds -- everything from screeches to a deedle-eedle-eedle song to a soft little mumble. :D
There used to be so many jays around when I was growing up in the southern U.S. but we see them rarely where we are now. Interesting to hear about the peanuts! Though given we have a lot of birds coming to our relatively small balcony it may be best not to draw them in.
Your icon is adorable. Some time ago a roommate of mine had exactly that combo of birds in those colors :)
