Fieldfares

The Shaggy Ponies in the field over the canal from my house share their grazing land with a lot of bird life. The most common year-round visitors are the wagtails, but in the winter, they also share with the fieldfares.

They're difficult to photograph against a grassy green background, as their subtle colouration renders them effectively a Small Brown Bird unless you're quite close to them. In the snow, however, they're a little easier to capture. I happened to look out the window when our most recent (and hopefully last) snowstorm hit this weekend and saw them near the house.

Thanks! As ever, I wish for a longer reach on my telephoto lens, but I think this is probably the most common amateur wildlife photographer's lament. :P

Me too. I have on rare occasions seen them in the garden, but never managed to get a decent shot.
