Apparently a squirrel can do a lot of damage to pipework.

I had squirrels cost me a fortune in car repairs when they chewed through the wiring from underneath!

I assume so (based on my dim understanding of the circumstances and the lack of guns in the UK, chasing the squirrel out was probably a lot easier and safer than trying to kill it).

I read somewhere that they're the most intelligent rodents, more so than rats. It decided to remodel from the inside....
