Quokka on Rottnest Island, Western Australia

Let's see if this photo posting thing works.....Thanks for all the assistance.  It's interesting that everyone had a different way of posting photos to Dreamwidth but I chose the one most likely to work for idiot, i.e. an app that does the hard stuff for you!.

This guy here is a quokka, a variety of wallaby found on Rottnest Island offshore from Perth.   "Wild"  really isn't accurate any more;  they are very experienced in shaking down tourists and there's a special gate into the island's general store to try to keep them out.  Operative word "try."  I honestly can't remember if this is my photo or my friend's.

They are very cute and they know it; anywhere you go on the island, quokkas will show up and expect to be fed.

Heyy, your photo posting worked! And how cool to see a quokka here :) From this angle they seem much more like muskrats than I'd realized.

Willem de Vlamingh would have agreed with you! 17th Dutch explorer who, upon seeing quokkas on the island, gave it the name Rottnest - Rat's Nest.

They are sneaky urban beasties, given that their home is full of tourists all year round! We stopped to picnic in a non-standard spot, I put my cup down slightly out of reach so as to not knock it over on the picnic blanket, turned to say something, turned back, and there was a quokka, casually drinking my water. Which is a no-no, but I seriously wasn't expecting that level of sneaky.

Not that I remember. But I had all of the Offspring with me to do the distracting, and I was trying to eat lunch without wearing it, so it really didn't need to be much sneaky at all.
