Five-Coloured Peppers

Five-coloured peppers. These are tiny hot peppers that I grew indoors last summer in a pot. They go through five colours as the fruits ripen - green, white, yellow, purple, and finally bright red. You can actually use them in cooking, but they don't have much flavour at all - they're just hot.

I've grown those! They make a truly excellent deterrent for nibbling deer.

I have probably told the story somewhere on this comm before, but there was a fine summer day I came outside in the morning to find four things:

- Deer tracks meandering up to my five-color peppers
- A neat bite taken out of a top branch
- A scattering of leaves and pepper pieces
- Deer tracks racing out of the yard

I laughed so hard. :D I don't wish the deer any harm, and in fact grow some things because they like them... but I've bitten into unexpectedly hot things too. They just responded like I wished I could.

Do they, now!?! I'll try that next year, then. My tomatoes were going along wonderfully, when the fruits and leaves both got eaten by deer*. I can't really blame them, since I put dried corn out in the winter for them and the rabbits, so they've learned that my yard often has food. I would like to repel them from the things I don't want eaten, though.


* And I literally cannot imagine wanting to eat tomato leaves - those things smell so nasty! However, middle of autumn, food everywhere, and they picked the leaves clean, and just took a nibble here and there on the fruits.

What lovely colors! Are they hot like a habanero? or scotch bonnet? or ???

(Less technically, would you eat them raw?)

Well, I'm not given to eating raw hot peppers to begin with (I use them for spice), so I'm probably not the best judge. As I said, though, not much flavour there, just heat.

I wonder if pan-searing or oven-roasting the little things would bring out more flavor and modify the heat a bit. Hm.

I've never imagined that peppers really could be purple. What a bounty of color!

They look very nice as a decorative plant anyway even if they don’t taste of much. 😊

That's what I had them for, yeah. I put a few into recipes just because, but they're mainly for decoration.
