I found this shell in a river in Minnesota. It's from a freshwater bivalve, maybe a mussel. My brother suggested that river otters crack them open on the rocks, eat the inside, and throw away the shells. The inside is shiny mother-of-pearl, the outside is brown.

Oh interesting! We're not close to a river here though I imagine we might have otters in the ones in the county. I hadn't thought about what shellfish we might have around.
