So it finally stopped raining here in the northeastern US! After a truly miserable weekend - half my friends have flooded basements - the sun was gloriously shining during my walk to the T this morning, and I took some pictures to share of Things That Are Growing. \o/!

Moss in the cracks:

[a photo peering along a brick fence, with moss growing in the cracks]
(My camera is not really good enough for this shot, but I tried.)

[a photo of the same brick fence with moss, from the top this time, with the city visible beyond it]

Daffodils are growing!

[an artsy photo of daffodil shoots in a bed in front of an office building; the brick columns of the flowerbed cast stark shadows across the flowerbed]

[a close-up of tiny daffodil shoots poking out of the ground]
This one caught my eye because it's pushing aside a solidified chunk of recently-sodden mulch to get to the sun.

[an open, upside-down umbrella, torn nearly in half, underneath a shrubbery with its handle pointed in the air]
No umbrella is safe from the hunger of THE SHRUBBERY.

This photo of the frozen Charles River is about a month old, but as I have no place better to post it I'm dropping it here.

Come on, Boston, bring me more spring weather!

Edited to fix invisible alt-text.

This seems like the right place for the Secret Garden quote!

"They are daffodils and lilies and snowdrops. They are working in the earth now--pushing up pale green points because the spring is coming."

"Is the spring coming?" he said. "What is it like? You don't see it in rooms if you are ill."

"It is the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine, and things pushing up and working under the earth," said Mary.

There are bulbs doing that in Mom's garden, to, though since her mulch is now a solid layer of sonned black maple leaves, it's like it lifting an entire (half-rotten) blanket in sheets.
