Some new-to-us birds

This is a hawfinch. We've never seen one of these before in the garden.


This is a fieldfare. We have seen one in the garden once before, but they generally don't seem to come into gardens much, so it's still rather special. It was sitting there eating apple for almost the entire afternoon.

They are, especially the hawfinch. The fieldfare, in my opinion, looks a bit cross. :p

The fieldfare does look grumpy doesn't it. Lovely spotted chest though!

It must be thirty years since I saw a hawfinch last. I'd almost forgotten how striking-looking they are.

What an adorably grumpy-looking fieldfare! For some reason I never seem to see them in winter even though there are plenty of them here in summer.

They really are. One of the first things Husband said when we saw it, after "hey, what's that?" and "come and look at this bird!", was that it looked distinctive enough it should be easy to identify.

I don't think I've ever seen one in real life before. Very easy to identify, though. :)

Oh my, those *are* special! They're both new to me.

We've seen the fieldfare once before, but they typically only come into gardens when they're having trouble finding food, so it's rare.

I don't think I have either. It's distinctive enough looking that you'd think you'd remember.
