Winter oaks. I love this stand of oak trees and have taken them all year round!

 

A stile into the forest. The fence is long gone but the stile remains!

This frozen tussock looks almost like a model iron age hill fort- we have several full sized ones locally!

That first picture, those look like the "mighty oaks" that I read about. The ones in the woods not so much. I think our oaks here get a much greater diameter but they don't get height, except very old ones. None of uor oaks are useful for lumber like yours are.

Less gets taken these days as they are a protected species- the days of the 'wooden wall' battleships came close to wiping out the native oak forests.

I enjoyed the walk immensely! I love the English countryside but I've hardly ever seen it winter. The snow makes the landscape seem quite faery-like and unearthly, like it belongs in an old story.
