We have Anna's hummingbirds here and they don't migrate, but they do drink 2 quarts of sugar water a day! You must have lots of patience hummingbirds zipping around are tough to photograph.
You're not wrong! Ours are quite skittish, even though I've seen many examples of hummingbirds who ignore or are used to humans. Ours dash away if we head for the camera and they'll often refuse to go up to the feeder if we're on the balcony. One exception seems to be if they're chasing away rivals, then we're not so important 😉
Mine will buzz me while I'm taking down feeders to refill, and will come perch on a feeder placed on the windowsill with me 4 feet away. Cheeky little folks.
