This morning a Jay (Garrulus glandarius) showed up at my bird feeders for the first time ever.

It's always cool to see how different birds with the same name are across distance.

Yes, the Eurasian Jays (this is one of those) are completely different from the blue jays and whiskey jacks that you get in North America 😊

I keep forgetting North America also has jays!

Yes! But they’re so different! I have lived both in the UK and Canada (and now in Germany) so I have seen both types! (Well really I have seen 3 because Whisky jacks are grey jays).

First time I saw one of those it was a real "What is THAT???" moment, seconds before having to leave for work, so I just stuffed the bird book in my bag. It's a surprisingly colourful and exotic looking bird for this part of the world.

Yes, it's interesting that so many of the birds who stay in Sweden for the winter have really colourful plumage. I wonder why.

What a beautiful, cheeky bird! The scientific name cracks me up. How perfect. I never knew a jay of any designation that wasn't stuffed with opinions and eager to broadcast them to the world.

I love how alert and as you say, cheeky it looks in that photo! And yes, our jays might not be as talkative as I've hear many North American jays are but they're certainly very LOUD when they do have something to say :-)

Yay, I'm pleased that you've attracted one! I love the striking colouring on their faces and that little splash of blue in their wing feathers.

I managed to attract TWO of them the week after! It was such a treat to see them so close. Usually I just see them in the autumn when they're flying to and from the oaks in town.
