yourlibrarian: Mama duck and babies (NAT-EdwinaBabies-yourlibrarian)
[personal profile] yourlibrarian posting in [community profile] common_nature
In my last post I updated about the baby geese we'd had around our lake. The earlier duckling batches I posted pics from have now morphed into many many ducks around our place.

The ducklings began stretching out in what seemed like a week.

Then they began to morph out of their fuzziness.

Soon they were looking like teen ducks, followed by looking like adults, just a little smaller.

In the meantime we spotted a different looking duck amidst the adults.

Apparently this is a duclair duck, the first we've ever seen.

Although with all the grown ducklings, he's less easy to spot now, we saw him the other day. No idea if there's a nest of his babies in process.

So many baby ducks made it! Your lake is obviously good habitat. That handsome fellow looked like a mixed breed to me, and some reading confirmed it; the Duclair ducks arose as crosses of domestic ducks (the white) with wild (presumably also mallards).
