Our Siberian irises managed to stay open and on display for 12 days before the rains came. I love the intense violet-cornflower color highlighted by white & mustard veins running out from the sex bits
Then it poured, and the peonies loved it. Today I learned how ants patrol peonies and this soaking wet hot pink peony is hosting at least 3 tiny black ants
According to the University of Illinois Extension:
As buds swell and get larger, the green sepals [outer leaves] become coated in nectar, which draws in ants and other interested insects. The benefit to the peony is that ants readily defend their food source and will actively remove other insects.
While showy flowers are fun, I also appreciate the soothing intensity that humidity and storms bring, making these dark green teardrop-shape leaves look very soft
