Photos: House Yard

I took some pictures around the yard today. These show the house yard. See the House Yard, South Lot, Savanna and Prairie Garden, and Back Toward the House.


This is the new birdbath on the patio. It's sitting atop a can that collects water during a rain, where birds liked to splash. Hopefully they'll like this expanded option.




The rain garden is mostly green now. The middle is columbine, the back is bleeding heart in the center and heuchera on the right.




The bleeding heart is blooming in the rain garden.




Looking northeast across the house yard, you can see the log garden.




The pear tree is blooming in the orchard.




Lilacs are starting to bloom at the east edge of the house yard.




Looking east across the house yard, you can see the barrel garden.




The barrel garden has daffodils and tulips blooming.




Pink tulips stand near the barrel garden.




This one is red and yellow, likely a 'Rembrandt' tulip.




This is the forest garden.




Celandine poppy is sprouting.




Astilbe is sprouting. Last year I planted two 'Deutschland' astilbes and they both came back. :D Their frothy ivory flowers had a strong vanilla scent.




Bluebells are blooming in the forest garden.




The flowers really do look like tiny bells.




This hosta is just starting to send up shoots.




This one is already leafed out.




Garlic chives grow in the cistern garden.




Sorrel is getting big.




Oregano grows in the strip garden.




Bergamot is leafing out.




This is chocolate mint.




This is the old picnic table.




Moss covers much of the ground near the picnic table.




Here is a closeup of the moss.




Some of these wildflowers are starting to sprout.




This trough pot never grew much because it lacked drain holes, so I turned it into a mini water garden for the tree frogs who like to hang out on the picnic table once it fills with plants.

I had to cover the bleeding heart again, we have another frost warning tonight.

The pear tree looks like the ones blooming around here, but I've never seen them produce anything.

Most street trees are ornamental pears that produce tiny fruit from pea to marble size. The most hazardous is the Bradford pear which was planted all over, but is highly susceptible to wind or ice damage.

Boise is so FULL of those Bradford pear trees! People complain about the smell but as good as my sense of smell is, that doesn't bother me. Just when all the petals start falling like snow, LOL

Love the Bleeding Heats, I should go check on my one small plant of it.

I particularly appreciate the high-resolution closeups of the moss and grass cover, with at least two colorways of violets (Viola sororia?) blooming.

I'll try to remember that people enjoy those. :D

I believe it to be viola sororia. There are solid deep violet, solid various shades of lavender, blue-and-white bicolor, and very rarely solid white. I have one yellow sweet violet that I planted in the forest garden, but it is not blooming yet.
