I saw my first garter snake and two snapping turtles near my local pond.

I was shocked to discover we had a snapping turtle in our lake since this didn't seem like an area friendly to reptiles.

No it scrambled away too quickly under some leaves.
EDIT I live in New England, I think it was an Eastern ribbon snake.
