They really are such beautiful birds. We get some smaller herons around here too from time to time; we've had a couple of small brown ones that I think are bitterns, but they never stay long. I suspect the lake is Mr. Great Blue Heron's home (shared with the geese) and the others are just passing through. Every now and then I'll see him launch from across the lake, and it's really impressive.
