Birds from Little to Big

Some bird photos from the last months. The hummingbirds are gone now but there was a lot of perching on the tomato cages in their last month.



I also saw a heron yawning!

I like it when they stick out their tongues. :D Also this summer, one buzzed me while I was watering the septic garden.

Oh it was definitely a full grown one -- we saw it prowling around the lake at other points. Never caught one yawning before though!

I was exaggerating by saying baby, but it is an immature Great Blue Heron. It's adult sized but doesn't have adult plumage yet. :)

Ah! Well it's certainly going to be good sized when it finishes growing.

The term I like to use is “gawkling.”

And those photos of the open-mouthed heron are practically audible.

No hummingbirds here of course, but there were herons around on our recent trip to Ludlow.

The hummingbirds by me liked sitting on tomato cages too!

It was a good hiding place -- I imagine they might have originally paid attention because of the redness of the tomatoes. But from there they could also guard the feeder against rivals.

One could fit 50 hummingbirds in there given what I've seen them eat!

These are so great. It's amazing to even get a perching hummingbird, they are often so endlessly active. I love the one where the green of the wing looks like a fancy cape.

And herons are usually so dignified, that yawn is PRICELESS.

Ha, yes, I think it's their stalking walk that gives them that dignified air.
