Lapwings at Upton Warren

We went to Upton Warren this weekend to try and catch a glimpse of the avocets. We didn't see the avocets, but we did see a lot of lapwings and black-headed gulls on the flashes. Every time I visit the hides Upton Warren I wish for a slightly longer reach for my telephoto (max 200 mm)...

Isn't that the constant wish of the wild bird photographer though? Just a slightly longer focal length.. The little buggers seem to excel at staying *just* out of reach!

Yes, yes it is. I would love to have a 100-400 mm telephoto, but it's difficult enough carrying around my 70-200 with the baby strapped to me.

We used to get loads of lapwings around during spring ploughing season and I loved to watch them and listen to their calls. Sadly we hardly get any these days - we are engulfed by miscanthus - I really miss them.

I'm glad you enjoyed the photo. It was bitterly cold in the hide and I had an anxious toddler with me (she was very good and stayed quiet and still!), so I only had a couple of minutes to appreciate the lapwings. It was worth the trip though.
