The first clutch of baby wagtails have left their nests and started following the parents around begging for food. They're much shyer than the parent birds but today I managed to get a pretty nice close-up of one while it perched on a fence close to me (click to enlarge):

I was sitting on the grass when this White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) decided that the path less than two meters from me was a great place to hunt for insects. Click to enlarge:

Bedraggled wagtail

It was a grey and dismal morning in rural Worcestershire, and this rather bedraggled wagtail seemed to be feeling the mood deeply.
