Unexpectedly Spotted

As I was finishing my grocery run this morning I spotted a hawk when heading home. Can you see it in the bottom pic?

I wasn't sure if any of my photos would come out given its great height and my camera phone. But it turns out it can be seen, if not that sharply.

What a wonderful thing to see! I think that's perhaps a ferruginous hawk, although I'm far from certain. Is that an indian mound in the last picture?

We're assuming it's a Cooper's Hawk since that's what we've seen around in past years. But it was far enough away that it could be something else.

And no, haha! Actually that is a dirt eyesore that was bought and dumped there 2 years ago in preparation for putting roads into the lot behind it, but the plan fell through for money reasons. So it's been sitting there gathering weeds ever since. We assumed something would happen this year but nope. Maybe next?

The first few led me to expect a long sequence of gradually increasing distance, then suddenly, BAM! Context!

What a cool photo! I almost never spot any birds of prey where I live.

Depending on where you are this might be the perfect time of year. At least in our area most trees are now bare which means they're a lot easier to spot. And always look up :)
