beautiful bird!

A small flock of Goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis) visiting my feeders today and managed to get a pretty good photo of one of them. They're such beautiful birds but I'm grateful they don't visit very often - the rate they consume hemp seeds would soon ruin my finances :-)

I didn't know that! I thought it was the tits that ate those but clearly the goldfinches were even more greedy than I knew :-)

Wow! Now I really get why the goldfinches I see are technically called American goldfinches -- and you have the original. Ours are very pretty, but yours are really next-level.

Yup. I read on wikipedia that there is a colony of these around the Great Lakes tho; after having been introduced in the 1800s.

Interesting! I'd no idea they'd been introduced in North America.

But American goldfinches suit their name much better! The European ones aren't very golden after all. (I've always wondered why it's called that in English. The Swedish name, steglits is onomatopoeic.)

I had to look up where in the world you are. We here in California don't have goldfinches that look anything like that! Nice picture.

I had to look up American goldfinches and they look much more suited to the name than ours. Ours are not nearly as golden!
