A small flock of Goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis) visiting my feeders today and managed to get a pretty good photo of one of them. They're such beautiful birds but I'm grateful they don't visit very often - the rate they consume hemp seeds would soon ruin my finances :-)

What's particularly cute about the cardinal couple is that they feed one another seeds from time to time. We sort of caught that here.

They also seem to have a chaperone...

We've had these finches around since we first moved here but so rarely spot them (and even more rarely manage a photo of them). Not sure why they avoid our food plate but saw one flitting around the other day. Read more... )

Goldfinch eating thistle seeds

Some people might call this "failing to mow the lawn properly". I like to call it "ensuring the local finch population has an adequate supply of thistle seed so I can take nice photos from just inside the back door".
