I ran into this lady while hiking today.

And she had a friend. This one was smaller, maybe a juvenile? I'm not very knowledgeable about deer.

They are quite common here and can be tolerant of humans. I was reminded of this video I took last November of a sighting in my neighborhood:

Video description: Two deer cross a residential New England street with autumn foliage. After a moment, a third hurries after them.

I enjoyed seeing these. How lovely for you!

The third deer in the video reminds me of the tiny red 'spaceship' in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" that's always trying to catch up to the others.

Last year's fawn, maybe. From the family sets I have seen in my neighborhood, we're almost certain the previous year's fawn has been with the doe the following year, almost until we have new fawns to worry about.

And I get to be a major worrier, as one doe, two years running, has left her fawn in our yard. Last year, she KEPT bringing her baby to hide in our yard while she foraged, so I feel very lucky.

Cute! They're quite common where I live too, but it still always feels like a nice surprise to stumble across them in the wild 😊

Cool photos! They look a bit like a larger version of the roe deers we have here in Sweden. Sounds like them too. I once met a couple in the suburb I live before - they were walking sedately in the middle of the road on a summer afternoon!

In Quebec, whitetail deer are called "chevreuil" which is what roe deer are called in France. Also, in Felix Salten's book, Bambi is a roe deer, but the Disney movie version of Bambi is a whitetail deer. So there's two instances where whitetail deer have stood in for roe deer, probably because of the vague similarity.
