I drove out to my local reservoir to charge my car battery and check the water levels after the unusually hot spring we've had (global warming and La Niña). It wasn't too bad as despite the heat we've also had bouts of heavy rain. The Watercare site says the local dams are at 85% of usual levels.

Reservoir lake almost up to the concrete spillway, about 6 inches below. Behind, bush-covered hills, blue sky with white clouds.

there's dampness in the spillway so it must have been overflowing not long ago, or that could be from rain

I've seen pictures of this before, and for some reason the way the spillway is freaks me out. lol

Oh this isn't the worst local dam outlet - another one locally has a smaller circular one (like if the dam was empty it'd be a huge vertical concrete pipe sticking up) and you can peer down into it from the service walkway. That's the really scary one!

Yeah There are a series of these dams, this one was built after WW2.

That's quite a lovely dam! What beautiful planning there.

They built a series of these, sometimes triggered by bad drought years. And this one was partly built due to increased water use by US military stationed in Auckland in WW2.
