2026 2nd Set of Ducklings

We spotted a second set of ducklings on the lake! This was somewhat distressing at first because the babies were following mama to the retaining wall, which she flew up onto and they were stuck below.







The baby on the far right even tried to jump up and climb the wall only to fall back in the lake. But all ended well.



Some people walking by made mama duck decide to jump back into the lake and the babies quickly followed. However I've had my suspicions that there's something in the lake that eats the babies, and it sure seemed like something was down there. She jumped up and started quacking, as the babies zoomed ahead. She then flew to another spot behind them and seemed agitated about something before they all swam away.



I liked the silhouette of the family as sunset was at hand.

That's a really interesting shot. I hope the babies live to become big strong mama and daddy ducks.

It's so odd because the first set of photos and the last two were taken less than 10 minutes apart -- I guess it was just the angle that had them so backlit.

And that’s one reason that Monet would devote an entire painting sequence to a specific haystack, in various times of day and atmospheric conditions.

(Although haystacks don’t complicate matters by paddling and spluttering, and as far as I know don’t get eaten until they’re doled out to domestic animals.)

So what might be hunting the little floofs from underwater? Probably not Susie or Sam, but carp? Snapping turtles?

Pike if they are native as they are here.

Pike (if you mean Esox lucius) are to be found all over Canada and the northern United States, and indeed are prized game fish.
