It snowed today, and I was wondering what the beach would look like covered in snow, so I went for a walk to see it. It was very pretty!

The migratory birds are here now, and some of them spend the winter at the shore. I spent some time watching a flock of sanderlings and turnstones as they were looking for food in the mud. Some crows kept following them around. It looked like the smaller birds were scared of the crows and tried to avoid them. There were many seagulls, too. My birding app even registered the call of a loon! Loons normally live in North America and Iceland, but some of them migrate to Europe during the winter months.

Today we went out to the lake. The first few pictures are from my yard, though.

Some images from a recent trip to California:

Up top was one of my favorite photos of the trip. There was something about the pastel minimalism of that photo that looked like a painting to me.

On October 8 it was in the mid 80s and we had the air conditioning on. On the 10th we had to run the heater, and on the 11th...it began to snow.

I've kept on forgetting to post to here/not had enough time to, so here's a backlog of a lot of photos. All 800 pixels wide. Australia.

I have been using a very narrow definition of "common", but after chatting with our awesome moderator, I'm going to start broadening that so I can post more! Currently I am in Hawai'i, and on Friday I went on a hike at 'Anaeho'omalu. Now, I do not live in Hawai'i, so this is not "common" for me, but it is a readily available hike for most Big Island residents--free, unrestricted access, and not too long (although it does go along a sandy beach and over a lot of rough cobbles, so is not very accessible for people with mobility issues).

The very best thing, in my opinion, is the abundance of Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas), who not only feed along the shoreline, but lie on the beach in the sun for hours, generally uncaring of people staring at them a lot and taking photos (you can tell the locals because they are not so fascinated by the turtles; I cannot imagine not being fascinated by the turtles):
