These pictures are from Sunday, but it's after midnight so the timestamp will say Monday. See the savanna and house yard.

This cute little redhead is an American Tree Sparrow. They're winter-only birds for us in New England, migrating south into the US after breeding in northern Canada. Their arrival after our summer songbirds have moved on is a welcome marker of the changing seasons here. I usually see them foraging in small groups, and there were two more with this one out of frame.

Despite the name, they are most often seen on the ground. They got their English name from settlers who thought they looked like the also-redheaded but unrelated Eurasian Tree Sparrow.

Four bird species
[L to R: Blackbird, blue tit, sparrow (F), sparrow (M), great tit]

Even though the weather here has warmed up, a continuous stream of visitors are at our feeders. I'm a little annoyed that today I spotted the blackbird and the woodpecker on the fat ball feeder simultaneously, along with the smaller birds listed above but when I approached stealthily (or so I thought) with my camera, the skittish woodpecker flew off before I could get a shot. Patience...!

We've had snow repeatedly over the past few weeks, making for a lot of new photos.

We have learned to recognize his chirps when he's on our balcony. There are three of them, I think. One has a very bold red band, then there's this one which is not as large, and then another one whose colors are quite faint and mostly yellow. Read more... )

I thought I'd already posted this here but apparently not. Our food plate attracts various sparrows and finches, and normally these are very bouncy birds, constantly hopping and flying in and out. This first picture is what they normally look like, even though it was taken during a rainy winter day.

A cacophany of goldfinches (with snow)
Things are a bit exciting around the bird feeders at the moment. It has been very cold for several days here in the UK, and I've noticed an increasing number of regular visitors to our garden. I'm having to fill the feeders every day. Today I filled the main seed feeder twice. There are currently five goldfinches feeding in the garden. I've never seen more than two at a time before. In this photo you can see four of them, plus a house sparrow and three blue tits, and a light dusting of snow.

Below the cut is one additional photo, in which you can see all five goldfinches, three sparrows, two blue tits and a robin.

Sparrows in hedgerow

I went for a walk on a cold, clear, crisp morning here in the UK Midlands, and these two gave me a very thorough squiz from their vantage point above the footpath!
