Yard Pictures: Forest Garden and South Lot

Today was cloudy again, but so many new things were going on, I took pictures anyway.  I broke them into three sets.  These are mostly from the forest garden and south lot.  See the flowerbeds and house yard, and the savanna and prairie garden. 


This is the forest garden.


Celandine poppy is well up.


Mayapples are just starting to open their umbrellas. There are six of these now.


Hosta leaves are flattening out now. I don't know what kind this one is; I got it in a swap. It is much more vigorous than the fancy ones I've bought, even though it's just plain green.


This may be wild ginger. Or more violets.


The cistern garden has chives, garlic chives, catnip, and sage.


Blue grape hyacinths are blooming around the contorta willow.


They are a soft medium blue.


Daffodils are blooming under the maple tree.


These are multi-flowered daffodils in pale yellow.


Maple seeds are forming.


This is the purple-and-white garden. The brighter green in the foreground is a hosta. The strappy bluish leaves in the background are ornamental allliums.


Blue-and-white violets are spreading, but haven't formed large swaths yet.


You can see where I've been weeding the septic garden. There are domestic and wild chives, garlic chives, sedum, and blue grape hyacinths.


The white garden currently has a ring of white daffodils blooming.


White hyacinths are opening.


Here is the wagonwheel garden.


Sweet mint is sprouting just outside the stones.


The western end of the old fishpond has naked ladies and daylilies everywhere.


This blue flower is hiding among the daylilies.


The hollyhock is well up beside the telephone pole.

Grape hyacinth are not native here but people do love them as a garden plant.

Apparently they're native to southern Europe, but popular in many other places and able to thrive in a wide range of habitats.

What lovely garden areas! We have grape hyacinths and daffodils starting here, but the hostas and violets are still waiting to spring back.

You sure have a lot of things coming up! The grape hyacinth look a lighter color than what comes up here. Ours are a bluish purple, a darker shade.

I have grape hyacinths in dark blue-violet, medium-blue, pale blue, and white. Most are dark.

One of the pluses of spring, seeing those new colors popping up.

I agree. I've managed to assemble a very wide range of colors here, which makes me happy. One I don't currently have and would like to add is witch hazel, which blooms in yellow or red in late winter to early spring.
