Tiny and Tall

In my last post I had pics of battling hummingbirds. Another thing they start doing is staking out the feeder and ambushing their competitors. This is a good opportunity for us to get some photos of them hanging out in the plant pots as normally they're in and out pretty quickly.

Hummingbirds on Sports Mode

As we know, hummingbirds are both tiny and speedy and I've found that sports mode is often a necessary camera setting to catch their movements. Thought others might like to see a few seconds of wing beats.

Lurking Hummingbirds

I nabbed a few photos this summer of the hummingbird camping out in our plants to fend off any intruders from our feeder. Read more... )

Birds Big and Small

It's been such a busy time, I can't believe it's been so long since I posted here. As such, here's a mix of bird posts from the last few months:

Last Bits of Summer

As we finished lunch last week I looked out the window and saw what seemed to be a hawk riding thermals. When I went on the balcony to get a picture turns out it was three of them. The close-ups aren't very good but it doesn't look like vultures to me. Read more... )

Ducks and Hummingbirds

You can't see it well in the above photo, but for the first time I saw a sandpiper around our lake. (It's in the upper right side). That was the best I could do with my phone while not alarming the ducks. Read more... )

Hummingbird Couple

We generally see hummingbirds fighting over the feeder at this time of year. We saw two of them swirling around it yesterday and to our surprise we later saw them perched in a nearby tree -- and it was a male and female. Might not be a couple but it seems pretty possible -- especially since we rarely see a male. Read more... )

Birds and Flowers

We've had these finches around since we first moved here but so rarely spot them (and even more rarely manage a photo of them). Not sure why they avoid our food plate but saw one flitting around the other day. Read more... )

Goodbye to the Hummingbirds

We may have spotted one yesterday but clearly most have moved on as they practically laid siege to our feeder each day for several weeks. Read more... )

More hummingbird

I've been trying to get photos of the hummingbirds fighting one another by the feeder but they're much quicker than I am! I did manage to get some shots of one eating though. I didn't catch its tongue snaking out but you can see its beak open in the last photo. Read more... )

Changing temperatures

We've noticed that late in the season hummingbirds take to perching near the feeder. Apparently this is because hummingbirds are moving south from farther north and there is more competition for food sources. Indeed we see two of them chasing one another off every day now. Read more... )

Hummingbird Grooming

Yes, some more hummingbird pics. Do you wonder how this hummingbird achieves its bedhead look? Why with a rather long (for a hummingbird) grooming session!

Moon and Hummingbird

This is the most recent case of what I dub a "low moon" -- meaning that it seems very low and large in the sky.
