We have seen two different batches of baby geese in the past few weeks. One of them is getting so big they'll be popping out adult feathers soon. Here's a recap.

A squab!

Today my dog found a squab on the ground (the dog was v respectful and did not harm or scare the bird). He looked as if he had recently been evicted from the nest and was just getting his bearings. He was perched on the wheel of a wheelie bin looking utterly bewildered. He had a Mohawk of yellowish baby feathers! It took him a little while but eventually he realised he had wings and flew away to join his fellow pigeons.

Not together! I daresay it would be a brave hawk that would challenge the overprotective parents that are geese. These are the first bird babies we've seen so far this year. Read more... )

Baby groundhog following mom groundhog
A mom and baby groundhog foraging in the backyard. I've seen a total of three young groundhogs, but mostly I just see one at a time.

One of the fun things each summer is to see babies out on the lake. We've counted at least 5 batches of ducklings so far. I think this was batch 3 but not sure anymore.

A mother duck and two ducklings came to dabble in the overflow of our lock, to groom, and to have a nap. I may have taken quite a lot of photos.

While on a walk recently I was briefly chased by a goose, which was a little baffling until I saw a batch of goslings near a retention pond. Overprotective much?

So when I saw two geese by our lake, seemingly standing at attention, I suspected babies might be about. Read more... )

There are lots of eggs hatching around our place, and here's a look at some of the new babies. Read more... )

I've been on the lookout for babies for a while now, but yesterday was the first time I saw some on our lake. As you can see from these photos it is utterly clogged with algae. For the ducks though this is swimming in a buffet.

I'm not sure how old the babies are but I doubt they're more than a few days old. Read more... )

A cool, drizzly day today. Everyone hit the feeders pretty heavily, as that was their best chance of getting a meal on a day like this, especially if they didn't want to be out for hours in the rain.

Juvenile Downy Woodpecker Out with Dad
Baby Downy Woodpecker (right), just out of the nest for a day or two, explores the back yard with his dad. The juvenile is a male - you can tell by the red crest growing in. Interestingly, while you see the red flash on the back of the adult's head, the red feathers actually grow on top, as you see here. As he grows and his display feathers get longer, they sweep back, and black feathers sweep backward to cover them.
