Although I am very allergic to bug bites, I will follow neat bugs to try and get decent photos on my phone. Right now, the oregano is in bloom, attracting lots of pollinators (and unsavory types such as hornets and wasps).

I took some pictures today, and I managed to get some of a tree frog.

Today we visited Dad. He wanted to show me his flowers, so I took some pictures. :D He lives northeast of where I do.

The final set of photos from today mostly covers the flowerbeds and the yard by the house.  See the forest garden and south lot, and the savanna and prairie garden.

Today was cloudy again, but so many new things were going on, I took pictures anyway.  I broke them into three sets.  These are mostly from the forest garden and south lot.  See the flowerbeds and house yard, and the savanna and prairie garden

I posted pictures of my yard today. This batch has some of the more nature-focused images, along with links to the others.

This set of pictures covers the Savanna. See the Forest Garden, the South Lot, the West Edge, the Prairie Garden, and the House Yard sets.

Far as I can tell, these just hatched from an egg case near my house.

Eight starlings
A group of eight starlings (only seven pictured) descended on our garden feeders this morning in rural Worcestershire, UK. They feasted noisily on the fat balls for about half an hour, keeping everyone else at bay, and then departed. I don't think they were missed by any but the humans who had enjoyed watching them.

Male and female cabbage white. Mating?
I'm hopeful that someone with better knowledge of butterfly behaviour can tell me what's going on here. I think these two are going through a mating ritual. The female (below in this photo) is sitting quite still on the grass with her wings flat and abdomen raised perpendicular to the ground. The male was repeatedly bombarding her from above. I was trying to photograph them with quite a high shutter speed but because his "attacks" tended to buffet her, I lost focus 95% of the time. This was the best I could do. They tumbled off over a hedgerow before I could come to any certain conclusions about what was going on. So, er, are they preparing to mate? Or is something else going on?

Small copper
Today I spotted a new (to me) butterfly in our garden! At first I thought it was another gatekeeper, of which we have many, but then I realised that the sides of its wings had multiple spots rather than the single eye that gatekeepers' wings have.

Small coppers are not uncommon, but I've never seen one here (rural Worcestershire) before. I was under the impression their territory was further south. It makes sense with the unusually warm weather that they'd be spreading north. This one was a particularly vibrant specimen. \o/

My Eldest made a bird box with her Granddad over the winter holidays a couple of years ago. We put it in the hedgerow when we got home, and promptly forgot about it.

Until a couple of weeks ago, when we noticed a blue tit seemed to be going in and out of it regularly.

The baby blue tits have hatched! We can hear them peeping inside, and this afternoon I got the chance to sit outside and watch patiently from the bench some distance away whilst the parents darted in and out of the box, carrying in food and removing waste.

I was very excited this weekend to have gotten some of the best macro shots I've ever taken of a holly blue butterfly in my garden! They are tiny and infrequently settle at eye level so this was a treat.

Banded demoiselle
Banded demoiselle perched on the roof of the woodshed. The toddler was delighted.

We get these damselflies as well as dragonflies flitting through our canal-side garden every year, but they don’t often stop and say hello.

Brimstone butterfly
[Macro image of a female brimstone butterfly sitting on a green leaf, with lovely veined and spotted green wing underside on display.]

I am thrilled to have taken this photo. Brimstones visit our garden every summer, but I've never seen one actually have a lengthy rest in it, let alone allow me to get this close with my giant macro lens and pap it repeatedly.

Comma butterfly
[Macro images of a comma butterfly from the side, wings partially open, with its brilliant orange and black colour scheme & scalloped edges in view.]

I was getting a bit worried that the oregano and lavendar were in bloom and I had yet to see many butterflies in our Worcestershire garden. Today, though, I saw three cabbage whites, a very tattered small tortoiseshell, two skippers and two speckled woods. This was a tremendous relief. I also disturbed quite a number of white plume moths whilst clearing out weeds. They all flitted into the hedgerow, which I left untouched, so I'm hopeful they weren't too put out.
