A floodle is a giant puddle that forms in a low spot on relatively flat land. In some areas, they may only last a few hours or days, but in others they can last for weeks or even months. It depends on the soil composition, water table, and whether or not more rain falls. They can be natural, or because of human foolishness.

Today we drove down to Toledo and Greenup to view the eclipse where totality would last a couple of minutes. We had a nice drive down.

My mom said there was "a toad under the garden hose," which I assumed meant, like, inside the hose housing, but I didn't see anything. 💔

Stepping outside again a few minutes later, I spotted it from a distance.

It's under the barest little overhang, where the hose sits on a rock. Chillin'. It's very well camouflaged among the mulch, but I just wanted to see it that badly, I guess.

(I don't know what subspecies of toad it is, but I'd assume Eastern American Toad, just because I live in Wisconsin.)

We have 2 dwarf lilacs on our balcony, which have now begun to bloom. They stay outside all year but given the increasingly erratic temperatures, in the past 5 years my partner brings them in on freezing nights once there are signs of buds. We've speculated for some time as to what the birds think about these bushes near the food plate that appear and disappear regularly. Read more... )

These pink blossoms were so pretty to see. When I got closer I could tell the tree was abuzz with bees and was able to snap one going about its work.

Yellow wagtail standing on the wing mirror of an old blue Toyota Yaris.

This is how we know spring has finally arrived. This yellow wagtail - I assume it's the same one - arrives every year to use our house as the stage for his mating dances. One year he spent his time prancing on the windowsill of my husband's office. Another year it was my office window. This year, he's decided that the best place to show off is the wing mirror and passenger door of our second car. He has also produced a prodigious quantity of poop to festoon the mirror's casing but it seems pointless to wash it until his ritual has paid off!

One of the advantages of giving up on the battle with the dandelions in the lawn is that it means more finches visit the garden, including this handsome bullfinch.

A mother duck and two ducklings came to dabble in the overflow of our lock, to groom, and to have a nap. I may have taken quite a lot of photos.

This wood pigeon conducted a very thorough garden inspection last week. I am not sure whether or not we passed. Presumably we'll receive a report in a few weeks' time.

Warblers are almost impossible to see and even more impossible to photograph, but this afternoon I managed to not only spot, but also to take a couple of photos of, a male Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) high up in a birch.

Eldest and I were just finishing a walk on the towpath when we spotted a pair of swans doing a slow dance in the section of canal next to our house.

We watched them for a while and then it appeared they were finished, so we put the camera down and moved closer. We were a little shocked when the male jumped on top of the female, hence why some of the photos under the cut are a little blurry, as above!

Holly Blues (Celastrina argiolus) are apparently quite common here in Sweden but this is the first time I've seen one myself. It perched on a Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa) long enough for me to get a photo, which I thought was very nice of it!
